It is suddenly spring after what feels like an endless wet and windy winter. I had fully intended to spend the winter getting on top of the infrastructure of the allotment so that I could sail into the busy spring period unfettered by things still to do. But the conditions were so wet that it was difficult to find a free period when it wasn’t hammering it down, the soil was so waterlogged that as you turned the soil it filled with water. And walking around turned tracks into bogs. It isn’t worth the effort or the effect on your soul to try and work the soil in those conditions.
This is when it can feel like a slog but any progress is still progress right? That is why I like to take pictures to remind myself that things are getting better all the time, even if they aren’t perfect, yet, ever…it is all part of the process. I have been concentrating on sorting out my greenhouses, where it is possible to get things done and ready for the the tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.
Wins:
I still have stuff to eat from my plot: leeks and the last of the kale and purple sprouting brocolli.
The feverfew seeds I foraged last year have germinated well and I now have hundreds of potential plants. The mullein plants I planted out last year from seeds gathered from a plant at the end of my street, have survived winter well. I intend to grow more botanical plants. And more flowers, to add colour and bring in the insects.
I have frogspawn in my little pond this year, looking forward to seeing more frogs (and less slugs as a result).
The weather has improved and I have three rows of potatoes in the ground now
